Located just up the street from the Pancake Clubhouse at 32nd and Sandy, Full Life's mission is to provide fulfillment for people with disabilities, with the understanding that each client has different abilities, different challenges. The clients explore music, art, theater and film and search their creative side of their personality.

This is a new and innovative program that combines contemporary art-practice with recycling, slop and an age-old, internationally used art-form. The Pancake Clubhouse is pleased to announce our next artist-in-residence all the way from Oakland, California. For his 24-Hour Halloween Residency, Steuart Pittman will paint an incredibly simple wall mural in response to the following question: "We assume there to be differences between the artist in a studio and a house painter working as a means of income. But in what ways might these practices intersect?" As he works, Pittman will assist Pancake Clubhouse residents in distributing Halloween candy to Trick-Or-Treaters. A mural-unveiling ceremony concert will follow, featuring a performance with his band, Boomerang Boomerang and other ghoulish musical delights.

Pittman graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 2007. He currently lives and works in Oakland, California, where he attends Mills College and studies painting.

As morbid as it is charming, this show consists of humane animal-based visual art by local artists. All of the subjects are "found" animals - aka roadkill, found bones, ect. It will include photography, bone sculptures, embalmings, mummies, a small-scale claw arcade game filled with real skulls and so on.

The opening night reception will be on Thursday, October 2nd at 6pm and will feature a musical performance by a saw-theremin-saw trio.

During the opening reception of Neighborhood Projects, Brian Merkel will punch a hole in the wall of the Pancake Clubhouse. For the 24 hour period following this action, Brian will be hosting a repair shop. Please bring objects in need of repair* to the opening performance. Objects might include: tables, chairs, lamps, sculptures...etc. Repaired objects will be returned the night of the closing performance, when the hole in the wall will be mended.

*definition of "repair" to be interpreted by the artist/handyman

Bio: Deciding to head west from Michigan at the age of 18, Brian Merkel settled here in Portland, Oregon. He currently works as a handyman for two retired philosophers who own property up the west coast. He enjoys tennis and is fascinated by trees. Brian's short film "Our Joey," loosely based on Joseph Beuys' performance "I Like America and America Likes Me," is being shown at the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival this summer.

About: The 24-hour Residency Program is an ongoing project organized and facilitated by Cyrus Smith for the Pancake Clubhouse Historic Township and Activity Destination for the Living Arts (welcomes you). During the 24-hour period of a residency, Cyrus acts as assistant, cook, and documentarian in order to bring focused attention to deserving artists and projects.

A creature that has enamored sailors, mystified biologists and motivated ancient myths is within your reach as it is interpreted through artistic efforts. Jarrett Davidson and McDowell along with the Pancake Clubhouse Historic Township and Activity Destination for the Living Arts would be honored to present your interpretations, investigations and inspirations regarding the magnanimous marine mammal that is the Dolphin. With your contributions, we can reveal the hidden cultural implications of our fellow mammals beneath the sea.
In honor of their intelligent and social behavior, we humans shall discuss and celebrate the notion of the Dolphin, as the show opens on Friday, August 1st. For the remaining days of the month of August, the Dolphins will travel into the unknown. The depictions and representations of these animals will gracefully swim their way into our hearts and minds, and shall continue to ride the waves of our consciousness as we consider our relationship to them.

The Pancake Clubhouse is excited to announce "E2 and Friends," A show featuring current and former members of the art collective Empire Squared, based out of Northern California. The collective, active since 2002, continues to feature some of the most talented artists working behind the "Redwood Curtain." Alumni of the collective will also be contributing from all over the Bay Area, and from right here in Portland OR. Please join us on the 4th of July for a very patriotic opening. Local Marshall Stokes will be headlining this group show with some brand new pyrography (that's wood burning).

Come on Down Today, Saturday June 7th for a Gardening project with Sandy Sampson!

Sandy will be starting a community garden as part of a residency here at the Pancake Clubhouse! We will be reclaiming an unused plot of land nearby for use as a community vegetable garden. In the spirit of guerilla gardening, the neglected piece of land between Pacific and Holladay on NE 24th avenue, will be totally transformed over the course of the day, culminating in an afternoon BBQ, to which all are invited.

Sandy asks that guests bring a shovel in the morning, and vegetable starts in the afternoon if they would like to join in! No gardening experience required!

Sandy Sampson is one of the founders of Parallel University a not for profit institution created to support and validate independent initiative. Born in Denver, Sandy now splits her time between her home in Portland, Oregon and Las Vegas, Nevada where she is working on "What Stays in Vegas?" a long term collaboration with locals and visitors. Sandy's longest on going collaboration, current working title "Motherhood" begun in 1993, is with her daughter Francesca is certainly her most complex and sustained effort to date.

Come on Down First Friday for a group show entitled "Group Show," which will be a showcase of all artists who are involved in the summer and fall schedule here at the Pancake Clubhouse! Over 25 artists from all over the west coast will be showing their best stuff, along with plenty of locals and a lawn installation! (did we mention we are totally insane?).

Music for the opening will be provided by Travis Wiggins and Spencer Doran.

This show will also be the debut of our caterers, Congratulations Cookies, who will be giving away free cookies during the opening. Specialty cookies with a generous helping of praise!

Tonight we will be featuring Luke Forsyth’s Portland debut solo show, “Heckaville: Pictures from home.” This site-specific, installation work is a loose psychological self-portrait, that he calls "a mind map giving physical streets to a dream scape shadow world." The people are friendly and accept him as one of their own. It is a beautiful city you should come enjoy it for yourself.

The show will also feature collaborations from the Experimental Team “Hope” Folk Art Ensemble Experiment of which Luke is a founding member.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION!

The Pancake Clubhouse Historic Township and Activity Destination for the Living Arts (welcomes you) wants you to get involved! We are now accepting applications for visual arts, events, situations, consignments, publications, editions, screenings, and art type what-have-yous of all kinds!

We will have visual art shows rotating every month, host events and situations throughout the year, and maintain a shop and zine library. The space is about 600 square feet, 400 dedicated to shows/events/gallery space, 200 dedicated to the shop/reading room. Located at NE 24th and Pacific, we will be keeping open hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5pm, as well as for special events.

Please feel free to apply to use the space in any way, but do consider that the Clubhouse hopes to serve multiple purposes simultaneously. See attached file for application instructions!

We will be holding our first review April 25th, 2008!!!!

Special Event!

This Saturday from 10am-5pm Avalon Kalin will be giving away much of his belongings, and playing improvisational jazz music at the Pancake Clubhouse. Avalon would like to invite you to come jam with him, and take an item of significance from his life. Instruments will be provided.

Avalon asks that you only take what you will use (no resale), but will not ask for any monetary compensation. This event will also mark the release of a zine on the subject of the belongings to be given away.

K Sims is clothing designer and excessively creative person living in Portland, Oregon. she works mainly in recycled textiles, fashioning women's wear, coats, hats, and bags out of old curtains, bedding, upholstery, vintage clothing, and whatever she found in the freebox down the street. she believes that working with recycled things gives a breath of life to the garment, a discreet history tucked away in an old coat reincarnated as a beautiful dress. K has extensive experience in costume design for theater and film, and in creating custom-made garments. her influences include deconstructionist philosophy and architecture, early 20th century couture, pipe organs, cephlopoidia, abandoned industrial sites, yohji yamamoto, punk rock subculture, 19th century illustration, alexander mcqueen, mummification and peanut butter and eggplant sandwiches.

We are also having a special guest join us . A Touring film maker, Siloen Daley will be screening 'Vegan Delights from Halifax, Nova Scotia' @ 9:00 pm ish.

Description:
Inspired by her newly completed film, Siloën Daley brings a one hour program of heartfelt animated and mixed-animated short films made by herself and women who at one time all lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

So bring art making supplies and popcorn. It's bound to be a fun event!!!

Artist in Residence Avalon Kalin!!!

Special thanks to Avalon for an active and all together inspiring residency! The day was filled with a walk shop, a new tradition (a pillow case to be passed along to future residents), a series of performances, and a hand dancing workshop. Here's a picture of Avalon, and of Janet Pants teaching our guests how to perform the hand dance.

Avalon plans to perform a series of choreographed “hand dances for sitting” created by local dance choreographer Janet Pants by request of the artist. Dance performances will occur throughout town during the residency and will be presented at a fabulous pot-luck dinner on Saturday, February 9th at 6pm. Jane and Avalon will also invite guests to join them in learning and performing a hand dance during the dinner.

Avalon Kalin is a Portland based artist who explores consciousness and relationships in social contexts. Avalon was conceptual author of the 2001 film The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal, which won grand prize for best short film in the San Francisco Film Festival and was purchased by the Sundance Film Channel. Avalon has created public works including Open Reading Room and The Power of Fliers for Peer Pleasure 2 at the Yerba Buena Art Center, and Drumset Drumcircle as part of Taking Place organized by Red76 in Portland. In 2006 he created the Domestic Residency Project where he opened an extra room in his apartment to an artist for a one month period. He is currently a graduate student of fine arts with an emphasis in social practice at Portland State University.
